High performing low-latency Bluetooth® connectivity for Boosted Boards

We delivered highly responsive wireless connectivity for Boosted’s electric skateboards

Wireless-controlled electric skateboards

Boosted Boards established the benchmark for sleek design and innovative technology – for recreational boarders and commuters alike.

The first-generation Boosted Board had been well-received by the market but Boosted were driven to do better. They needed to overhaul their wireless link to deliver ultra-low latency, robust reliability, and richer device interoperability — without inflating cost or power budgets. Virscient stepped in, selecting and customising a Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) solution, architecting both hardware and firmware, and validating performance with controlled RF testing.

The results:

  • 70% greater range
  • 80% reduction in reconnection latency
  • 10 dB interferer tolerance
  • Flexible, upgradeable architecture that met Boosted’s aggressive schedule and product goals.

Boosted’s challenge

Boosted competes in the consumer electric mobility market, targeting riders who demand both fun and precision in their ride experience. Their users expect seamless, instant responsiveness from the remote control. Any lag or dropouts degrade brand reputation – and pose real risks to riders travelling at speed through urban areas or challenging terrain. Boosted’s goal was to evolve their wireless system into a next-generation platform that supports remote, mobile app, over-the-air updates, and future expansion — all while staying rugged, secure, and cost-effective.

Virscient's solution

Virscient approached the project in several different phases:

Technology selection & system architecture

  • Chose Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) as the wireless stack for its balance of latency, interoperability with smartphones, and power efficiency
  • Designed reference hardware guidance (PCB integration, antenna layout, power management)
  • Defined a shared SDK for firmware: pairing, protocol state machines, OTA updates, security layers

Firmware & software engineering

  • Developed protocol stacks and services/characteristics tuned for real-time control
  • Built build & release automation to support traceable, scriptable compilation and versioning

Validation, characterisation & optimisation

  • Deployed automated RF test systems with digitally controlled attenuation and interferer injection
  • Monitored steady-state and reconnect latencies, and tuned link parameters (BLE link layer, service definitions)
  • Iterated on system configuration to meet performance targets

Key Achievements

  • Wireless chip: BLE (vendor-neutral), with custom tuning
  • Performance targets: low latency, high reliability, interference robustness
  • Time frame: full end-to-end delivery from architecture through production transfer
  • Constraints: limited BOM cost headroom, tight power and antenna real estate, need for scalability and OTA update headroom
